Britain is grinding to a halt. Workers are downing tools and are ready to strike. With the printing presses shutting down too and a General Strike threatened, the only way the government can spread its news is through its own newspaper. It is 1926 and Winston Churchill is in battle with a fledgling BBC lead by John Reith about who controls the news and who tells the truth.
Now, at a time when the BBC is faced once again with the challenges of impartiality and the government is threatening its traditional status, Multi award-winning writer Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on stage, His Dark Materials on tv), has written a gripping new play about the birth of this great British institution.
Adrian Scarborough plays Winston Churchill, and the part of John Reith is taken by Stephen Campbell Moore, both well known on stage and screen.

This world premiere of a new play with music, based on Annie Proulx’s short story, stars two young American film and stage actors – Mike Faist as Jack (BAFTA nominated for playing Riff in the recent film of West Side Story) and Lucas Hedges as Ennis (Oscar nominated for his role as the son Patrick in the Oscar-winning film Manchester by the Sea). Both are making their West End stage debuts.
It’s 1963, Wyoming: a wild landscape of rural poverty where people live in insular and conservative communities. When Ennis and Jack take jobs on the isolated Brokeback Mountain, all their certainties of life change forever as they flounder in unexpected emotional waters.
Ashley Robinson (writer) says “I’m honoured to be entrusted by Annie Proulx to bring new life in new form to her timeless and universal story. A story that means so much to so many, and will surely mean as much to a whole new generation.” Jonathan Butterell (director) and Dan Gillespie Sells (songs) are also the creators of the hit musical and film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. Sells’ beautiful Country and Western songs weave heartbreakingly through this intense tale of an irresistible and hidden love. The original music is performed by the extraordinary singer, Eddi Reader, joined by her onstage Country and Western band. She plays The Baladeer and has an extensive musical background as well as 12 critically acclaimed solo albums and an MBE for outstanding contributions to the Arts.

Passion and heartbreak collide in Matthew Bourne’s contemporary take on the timeless tale of two star-crossed young lovers.

Matthew Bourne’s Romeo and Juliet gives Shakespeare’s timeless story of forbidden love a scintillating injection of raw passion and youthful vitality. Our two young lovers must follow their hearts as they risk everything to be together. A masterful re-telling of an ageless tale of teenage discovery and the obsession of first love, Romeo and Juliet received universal critical acclaim when it premiered in 2019.
This is another chance to experience Matthew Bourne’s reimagining of this timeless story!
